Pollinator Plant of the Week: Agastache

June 8, 2026 | News

June is Pollinator Month, and this week’s featured plant is one of the hardest-working perennials in the garden: Agastache, also known as Hummingbird Mint. With its colorful flower spikes, fragrant foliage, and incredible ability to attract pollinators, Agastache is a must-have for Boise gardens.

Why We Love Agastache in Boise

Boise summers can be hot, dry, and challenging for many plants but Agastache thrives in those conditions. Once established, it’s exceptionally drought tolerant and loves full sun, making it a natural fit for Treasure Valley landscapes and water-wise gardens.

Its tall flower spikes bloom from summer well into fall, providing months of color when many other perennials begin to slow down. Available in shades of purple, pink, orange, coral, and blue, there’s an Agastache variety for nearly every garden style.

A Pollinator Magnet

If you’re looking to support local pollinators, Agastache delivers. Its nectar-rich tubular flowers are irresistible to:

  • Hummingbirds
  • Native bees
  • Honeybees
  • Butterflies

In fact, many gardeners consider it one of the best pollinator plants available because it blooms continuously through the hottest months of the year.

Growing Tips

Agastache is surprisingly low-maintenance when planted in the right location. For the best performance, plant it in a spot that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. During its first growing season, water regularly to help establish a strong root system.

Once established, Agastache becomes quite drought tolerant and prefers deep, infrequent watering rather than frequent shallow watering. Be careful not to overwater, especially during the winter months, as overly wet soil can lead to root problems. A little neglect often helps Agastache thrive, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance Boise gardens.

Perfect Plant Pairings

Create a pollinator paradise by pairing Agastache with other Boise-friendly favorites:

  • Gaillardia (Blanket Flower)
  • Echinacea (Coneflower)
  • Salvia
  • Ornamental Grasses
  • Penstemon

Together, these plants provide season-long blooms, texture, and habitat for pollinators while thriving in our dry climate.
